General Network Switch Recommendations#
For optimum camera performance, Basler recommends using high-quality accessories tested for compatibility with our products.
Of course, other accessories can also be used with our cameras.
Basler strongly recommends devices that meet the following requirements:
- It is equipped with sufficient amount of buffer memory, greater than 512 KB per port. Be careful here as some vendors are giving the buffer memory in MB. This value has to be divided with the amount of ports available. Example: 2 MB for a switch with eight ports means 2 MB / 8 = 256 KB for each port.
- It supports jumbo frames (at least 9 KB) to reduce the CPU load
- The latency it adds on the data transmission path is lower than 20 µs
In addition, you may check if the switch does support power over Ethernet (known as PoE or IEEE 802.3af) if this is necessary for your application.
If you are not able to find this data, ask the network switch manufacturer for a more detailed data sheet.
Even if the technical data is fine, we recommend performing extensive testing before going into production. This remains the only way to ensure that everything is going to work without problems.
